If these numbers are low, you have a distribution problem, not a conversion problem. Before you panic about donations, make sure people are actually encountering your campaign.
Initial engagement: Are people interacting? Look at email click-through rates, social engagement (comments, shares, saves), time on campaign pages, video watch rates if applicable.
Target benchmark:
Email click-through: 2-5%
Social engagement rate: 1-3% of reach
Time on campaign page: 60+ seconds average
Video completion: 25-50% for longer content
If people are seeing your campaign but not engaging, you have a messaging or creative problem. The subject line or social copy got attention, but the actual content isn't compelling enough to act on.
Quality of engagement: This is subtler but important. Are people reading your full email or bouncing after the first paragraph? Are they watching your video through the impact section or dropping off early? Are they scrolling through your campaign page or leaving immediately?
These signals tell you whether your content is actually resonating or just generating superficial interaction.
What NOT to track in Week 1:
Total donations or conversions: Too early. You're building awareness, not expecting immediate conversion.
Comparison to your goal: Meaningless this early. If your goal is 100 donations over 90 days and you have 5 by day 7, that doesn't tell you anything about the trajectory.
Social media follower growth: Nice if it happens, but not the point. Followers don't fund your mission.
A Week 1 Example

If conversion rates are significantly lower, you have a trust, clarity, or friction problem. People understand what you're asking for—they're just not compelled to do it.
Path to conversion: How are people finding your donation page? Email? Social? Direct link? Organic search? Understanding this tells you which channels are actually driving action versus just generating noise.
I worked with a nonprofit that was celebrating their social media engagement while their email list was quietly driving 80% of actual donations. They almost cut email to invest more in social because engagement felt better, even though email was doing the real work.
Drop-off points: Where do people abandon? Started the form but didn't finish? Got to the payment page and left? This tells you exactly where friction exists.

What NOT to track in Week 2:
Total donations compared to goal: Still too early to panic. You're looking for trajectory, not totals.
Individual channel performance in isolation: Email might drive most donations, but social might drive awareness that leads to email signups that lead to donations later. Don't kill channels because they don't show immediate direct ROI.
Vanity metrics: Likes, shares, impressions are only useful if they correlate with actual conversions. If your most-liked post drove zero donations, it doesn't matter how many people liked it.
Week 3-4: Momentum and Sustainability
By Weeks 3 and 4, you should see patterns that indicate whether your campaign has sustainable momentum or is losing steam.
What to track in Weeks 3-4:
Week-over-week trends: Is engagement increasing, stable, or declining? Are conversions accelerating or slowing down?
This is more important than absolute numbers. A campaign that started slow but is gaining momentum each week is healthier than one that spiked early and dropped off.
Donor retention from previous campaigns: Are people who gave before giving again? This is gold. A returning donor is worth much more than a new one because they're lower cost to convert and more likely to give repeatedly.
If previous donors aren't responding, something about this campaign isn't resonating with your core supporters. That's a red flag.
Cost per acquisition: If you're running paid ads or promoted posts, what's your actual cost to acquire a donation? This should be decreasing over time as you optimize, not increasing.
Target benchmark: Varies wildly by sector and campaign type, but you should see improvement from Week 2 to Week 4. If costs are rising, your targeting or creative is getting stale.
Response to adjustments: If you made changes based on Week 1 or Week 2 data (fixed donation form, adjusted messaging, changed targeting), are you seeing improvement?

Individual post performance: You're looking for patterns across your content, not obsessing over whether Tuesday's post did better than Wednesday's.
The Metrics That Actually Predict Success

High engagement rate in Week 1: Campaigns where 25%+ of email recipients clicked through to learn more almost always hit their goals. If people are interested enough to click, they're interested enough to eventually convert.
Steady or growing weekly conversions: Campaigns that maintain or grow donation numbers week-over-week through the first month have strong momentum. Even if Week 1 numbers were low, consistent growth predicts success.
Low drop-off from donation form: If 60%+ of people who start your donation process complete it, your form is working well and you just need more traffic. If it's under 40%, you have friction problems that will limit success no matter how much awareness you build.
Returning donor participation: If 30%+ of people who gave to your last campaign give to this one, you have strong supporter loyalty. This is the foundation of sustainable fundraising.
Organic sharing: If 5%+ of your supporters share your campaign unprompted, your message is resonating emotionally. This kind of authentic advocacy is worth more than paid reach.
The Metrics That Don't Predict Success (But Feel Good)
These metrics make you feel like you're winning but don't actually correlate with campaign success:
Social media follower growth: Followers don't equal donors. I've seen campaigns gain 500 followers and raise $2,000, and campaigns gain 50 followers and raise $50,000.
Email list growth: New subscribers are great long-term, but they rarely convert during the campaign that attracted them. They need nurturing first.
Impressions: Millions of impressions mean nothing if people aren't taking action. I'd rather have 1,000 impressions with 10% conversion than 100,000 impressions with 0.1% conversion.
Media mentions: Getting featured in local news feels prestigious but rarely drives significant donations unless the story includes a very clear call-to-action and easy path to give.

If Week 1 shows low reach: Increase distribution. Send a second email to non-openers. Boost social posts. Ask board members to share. Run small paid campaigns to expand reach.
If Week 1 shows low engagement: Test new messaging. Try different subject lines, different creative, different emotional appeals. A/B test everything you can.
If Week 2 shows high drop-off from forms: Simplify ruthlessly. Remove optional fields. Reduce click requirements. Test mobile experience. Make giving as frictionless as possible.
